The See-Through Panel Build Guide
Turn an ordinary LCD monitor into a bare, light-transmitting panel you mount inside your case. Off, it's invisible glass. On, your desktop appears to float over your components.
How it works
Every LCD panel is transparent by nature. It only looks solid because a backlight and a diffuser sheet sit directly behind the glass, spreading light evenly across it. Take the monitor apart and remove just those two layers, and what's left is a genuinely see-through panel, one that still displays an image the moment you shine a new light source through it from behind.
Bonded to the back of the glass is a thin polarizing film, not the same as the backlight or diffuser. Peel or damage it and the panel is ruined for good; it won't display anything again. Identify it before you remove anything else, and leave it alone.
Three ways to build this
Same idea, different amounts of money and patience. Pick a lane, or mix part categories from each, tiers combine fine.
Built from a scavenged or broken donor monitor and the most basic parts on hand. Slower and scrappier, but it can cost almost nothing.
A verified working used monitor, brighter dedicated lighting, and tidier mounting hardware, a cleaner result on a modest budget.
A bare replacement panel and a universal driver board, addressable lighting, and a custom-cut frame, built to look intentional, not salvaged.

Sizing tip: favor a 4:3 or 5:4 donor panel over widescreen, a squarer shape fills a case window better. Placement tip: run LEDs along the panel's edges, not behind the center, to avoid one bright hot spot.
Tiers mix well. A free scavenged monitor paired with a nicer addressable RGB strip is a great result for well under $40.
The build, step by step
Fully discharge and unplug the monitor, then wait several minutes before removing any casing. Internal capacitors can hold a charge even after it's unplugged.
- Strip any anti-glare film, if present, soften the adhesive with a warm, damp cloth for a few hours, then peel.
- Open the shell and remove the back casing.
- Pull the power board and display driver board out as one unit, they're usually connected, and a few screws hold the video port. Keep this assembly; it drives the bare panel later.
- Remove the backlight and diffuser sheets carefully, without disturbing the polarizer film.
- Mount the bare panel to the case's side window, using your tier's mounting hardware.
- Install LED lighting behind the panel, wired to your chosen power source.
- Wire the driver board and connect video, HDMI, DVI, or VGA, to the graphics card.
- Test everything: confirm it's recognized as a second display, and check for even, glare-free lighting before final reassembly.
- Route the cables and close up the case.
If something's off
